This is a user-to-user technical support forum. I know I am not the only person in this situation is there any way that Apple could reintroduce the Mavericks update? Was the OS really so bad that Apple doesn't want anyone to use it ever again? That is definitely not the best solution - I live miles away from the closest store and since the computer is the heart of my audio studio I would need to have at least one day off to tear it down, take it in, then add it back into the system. I talked to a manager at a local Apple store and after consulting with his techs he told me that they could do the update if I brought in my Mac Pro. Without paying for a full upgrade to PT 12 I thought my best bet would be to go to the one OS version both companies could agree on, Mavericks, only to find that option barred to me. On the other hand, DropBox has decided to drop support for Mac OS Mountain Lion or below. Now, Pro Tools 10 cannot run on anything past Mavericks with any certainty (actually, it's a disaster), although it worlks well with Mavericks. I also use DropBox to send music to clients and collaborators (mostly the latter these days. I use this machine for Pro Tools v.10.3.10. Here's my situation: I have a 2010 Mac Pro 5,5, running Mountain Lion (and Sierra on a separate drive). Sierra is limited to the following machines: MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer). The requirements for Mountain Lion and El Capitan are: Your only other upgrade is Mountain Lion (10.8) which is available in the USA (but not the UK) in the Apple Store: Note that if your Mac is capable of handling Sierra this link is not available to you. If it isn't, but is capable of handling El Capitan you can upgrade to that using this special link: If your Mac is capable of handling Sierra you can upgrade to that for free. I'm afraid Mavericks is no longer available.

It could make more sense to get some “data redundancy” by opting to store data elsewhere via a backup service. In my opinion, the convenience and peace of mind these services provide are worth way more than several dollars a month.Īlso, if you did your own backups yourself, then you’d need a portable hard drive to make it work. Why go with a computer backup service if you can do these tasks yourself? Well it’s about making the time and effort to actually do what’s needed, and frankly, for less than $5 a month, it’s something I’d rather outsource. A free trial or account can give you a good idea if the service is a good match for your backup needs. Now with regards to pricing: for desktop computers, it’s $3.95 as well as $.50 per gigabyte each month while for each server, it’s $6.95 plus $.50 per gigabyte each month.įor more details on MozyPro, check out this link.īefore you decide on a computer backup service, keep in mind that this works best for users with high-speed internet connections due to the large amount of data involved. For each server and each computer you want to back up, you’ll need to buy a license. It provides an Administrative Console to manage backups from multiple computers, and you’ll benefit from encryption, alerts, bandwidth throttling, and more. It may actually be faster to order a DVD than wait for your backup to download on your home internet connection (think of the famous saying from the annals of computer networking: never underestimate the bandwidth of a truck full of magnetic tapes hurtling down the highway).įor business users, there’s MozyPro. You can right-click on any folder that needs recovery you can go to the Mozy website to download your files from there or you can order a DVD of your backup. You can restore your data in a variety of ways. You’ll get two months free if you prefer to sign up for a two year subscription. Their website offers handy tutorials to show you the basics.įor those who want unlimited backups through MozyHome, you can sign up for a one year subscription for $54.45. Windows XP, Vista, and Mac users can all use Carbonite. It won’t take more than a few minutes to recover small files or folders, but if you need to restore a large amount of your computer data, then you should plan on it taking a day or two, depending on how much data is involved. Alternatively, if you don’t have access to your computer, you can always visit the Carbonite website to get a hold of your data backup. In that case, you could go to your desktop to seek out your file or folder from your Carbonite Backup Drive and recover it by using the Restore option. What if you need to restore data? Let’s say you lose a file or a whole folder. So if someone doesn’t have your account password, you won’t have to worry about them snooping through your stuff. As far as security is concerned, your data is protected by encryption. However, if you try to upload more than around 20 gigabytes of data, you might find the process slow going. You won’t run into limits on the amount of data you can back up. Once you pay for the service, you can elect to have it back up your music, videos, program files, and other types of data as well. Their service will back up your documents, emails, pictures, and even data from programs like Quicken. I took a closer look at these well-known services to see if they are worth trying out.Ĭarbonite is a popular choice in the data backup arena. I keep many of my documents and pictures backed up in a portable hard drive, but using a computer backup service like Carbonite or Mozy is something I’ve been considering lately. For a lot of us, losing our important computer files means losing money. Joey: Trust me, you're like the best player I've ever seen, and you've got the Millennium Puzzle. Teach that rich, spoiled brat what a real duel's all about. Joey: We can take care of your grandpa while you take care of creepy Kaiba. Your friends can care for your grandfather while you and I duel. Teach Kaiba respect for the heart of the cards, Yuugi. And I taught you everything I know, Yuugi. Seto: Yes, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon is a rare and powerful card and this one will never be used against me. Téa: Kaiba, you should be ashamed of yourself. But I guess playing against a champion like myself was just too much stimulation for the old fool. With each of us putting up our most valuable card as the prize. I wanted to teach that boy Kaiba a lesson about the heart of the cards, but I lost. Why don't you come by my office and pick him up. But why would he leave the door unlocked? Joey: Okay Gramps, I'm back to get more cards. Joey: Man, I hope he has some cool cards today. But I'll teach him a lesson about the heart of the cards. Lackey: My master, Seto Kaiba, challenges you to a duel. Seto: Gentlemen, there's a little something I'd like you to pick up for me at the Game Shop. And one way or another, his Blue-Eyes White Dragon card. Seto: Fine! I've heard enough of your nonsense. You see, this precious card has bonded with my heart. Yuugi: You'd feel the same even if it were a common card, right Grandpa? So parting with it is completely out of the question. This card was given to me by a dear friend and so I treasure this card as I do that friend. Not because of its power or because it's so rare, but because of what it means to me. But this card is worth more than you could ever offer. If you won't trade, maybe you'll sell it. Gimme your Blue-Eyes White Dragon card and I'll trade you all of these. Is there anything else I can help you with? Seto: Now does this shop have any worthwhile cards or not? Can it be? The Blue-Eyes White Dragon in a dump like this? It is. Maybe you'd like to settle this with fists instead of cards. Hah, you wouldn't last two minutes in a duel against me. Seto: I am the number one ranked duelist in the country, and the favorite to win the Duel Monsters championship. Seto: Me? Duel you? I'd have more of a challenge playing solitaire. Maybe we could all duel together sometime. Joey: Hey, are you into Duel Monsters too? This is perfect. Seto: Not that it's any of your business, but I came to see the card. Tristan: Doesn't he have a big fancy company to run? What's he doing down here? Seto: If you can't, it certainly wouldn't surprise me. I meant, show me some other cool cards to get me started. Joey: Speaking of priceless, I'm ready to trade! There are only four of them in all the world. Tristan: It doesn't look all that special to me. The Blue-Eyes White Dragon, so rare, so powerful, I never let it leave my hands. Hah hah! How could I refuse? You kids are in for a treat. Solomon: Rare card? My special card? Hmmm. Yuugi: Gramps, could you show my friends your awesome, super rare card? Solomon: And I see you've brought company. Seto: Rare card? Could they have found the card that I've been searching for? Yuugi: Okay, maybe I could even get my Grandpa to show us this super rare card he's got. See, my Grandpa owns a game shop and I get all my best cards from him. Tristan: Whoa, you stink at this game, Joey. A card that powerful totally wipes me out. Yuugi: Yup! Pretty good move, but not good enough. The first player to eliminate the other player's life points wins the duel. Téa: See, each card has an attack number and a defense number. Joey's starting to get the hang of the game, but Yuugi's like an expert. Joey: Hey Tristan, Yuugi here's teaching me how to play Duel Monsters. Tristan: Oh, isn't he cute when he's thinking? Yuugi: Hey Joey! Earth to Joey! Hey, are you in there? It's your turn. He is infused with ancient magical energies, for destiny has chosen him to defend the world from the return of the Shadow Games, just as the brave Pharaoh did five thousand years ago. Now, five thousand years later, a boy named Yuugi unlocks the secret of the Millennium Puzzle. Until a brave and powerful pharaoh locked the magic away, imprisoning it within the mystical Millennium Items. But these Shadow Games erupted into a war that threatened to destroy the entire world. Voice: Long ago, when the pyramids were still young, the Egyptian Kings played a game of great and terrible power. (Responding to a request for an interview with Toews, her publisher Knopf Canada said in a statement that “Miriam’s own knowledge of those events came not through reading Jean’s journalism, but through a more direct, specific, and personal connection to the community itself, which predates Jean’s stories on the subject.”) There is no mention of the women whose lives inspired the book, or the journalists who amplified those women’s voices. While Toews’ book opens with a “Note on the Novel,” which summarizes the real-life events inspiring her book, the opening credits of the movie merely state that it is based on the novel. I had built a good relationship with one family in Manitoba when I covered the trial, and they graciously offered to host me and my brother Noah, a photojournalist and videographer, in January 2013 for our follow-up piece.Īlso overwhelming was the fact that the nuances of the stories that I helped the world understand were alive on the screen, but most people likely didn’t know that. What, if anything, had the colony done for them, and for itself, to heal? Given the nature of Mennonite communities in Bolivia-reclusive, hostile to outsiders-my best shot at getting answers would be to live in the colony itself for a short period, so the women could get to know me and, hopefully, trust me enough to open up. I wanted to know how the women were faring. After that initial reporting, I couldn’t get Manitoba out of my head. My connection to Women Talking’s origin story goes deeper than just covering the trial. The entire novel and film are, as appropriately titled, women simply talking. The plot begins with the rapists having been carted off to jail (for their own safety) and the women of an “ isolated religious community,” wrestling with the decision to stay and fight, or to leave. This would mark the first day of the violent fifty-one-day standoff, ultimately killing seventy-six people. If this sounds familiar, that’s because it is the premise for the novel-turned-film Women Talking (book by Miriam Toews film by Sarah Polley). 27, seventy-six federal agents attempted to arrest Koresh at his compound the following day. These two investigations came to a head in 1993 after the newspaper expose was published on Saturday, Feb. Simultaneously, the Waco Tribune-Herald newspaper launched an eight-month investigation into rumors of underage sexual assault within the Branch Davidian. This, among other reasons, was part of why the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) launched an investigation into Koresh's group, the Branch Davidian. In 1988, Koresh (and several of his followers) faced violent criminal charges because of an armed conflict within their church congregation. The extremist group was centered around its founder, leader, and self-proclaimed messiah, David Koresh. The Waco disaster was deeply rooted in religious extremism and cult radicalization. The five-episode limited series also provides a broader context for the escalation of the American militia movement, which foreshadows the infamous attacks of the Oklahoma City bombing and the storming of the U.S. Carmel that began on February 28, 1993, WACO: THE AFTERMATH focuses on the fallout of the Waco disaster: the trials of the surviving members of the Branch Davidian sect and the rise of homegrown terrorist, Timothy McVeigh. "Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the tragic events at Mt. Showtime published the official synopsis of the upcoming series. I guess it’s like the most you can kind of capture a moment is kind of being true to that.” “I think it’s important to write from what you’re going through at the time and trying to turn life into what you make. When interviewed by Howard Stern about the kinda dirty lyrics, Styles said he was just writing about what he knows. The song is all slinky guitar riffs and hooded come-hither eyes complete with a corny bridge in which Harry explains how he and Wilde complete each other: “I bring the pop to the cinema / You pop when we get intimate.” (Pop … popcorn … cinema). He sings, “I just think you’re cool / I dig your cinema.” Then the lyrics get a little more clunky. The song begins with the lyrics “It’s you / And I’m not getting over it / Darling, is it cool? / I’m stubborn when it comes to this?” Read: He’s possessive about Wilde and doesn’t plan on getting over her anytime soon. After their friendship officially transitioned into a romantic relationship, Wilde praised Styles on Instagram for “playing supporting roles in female-led films.” Although Wilde set feminism back a few decades by praising a man for doing the absolute bare minimum, it really showed just how much of a Styles fan she is.Īnd Styles feels the same about her. The duo grew close on set, with reports that they would spend long hours together in their trailers doing things that are between them and God. Back in 2020, Styles and Wilde met while shooting Don’t Worry Darling, a sexy psychological thriller helmed by Wilde. “Cinema,” a slick synth-pop tune, appears to refer to Wilde and her current vocation: the cinema. In “Cinema,” he sings, “If you’re getting yourself wet for me / I guess you’re all mine.” Someone call the horny police, if not for the meaning of the lyric (I’m not prudish - good for Olivia!) but for the ew delivery. Here’s everything we can glean about the duo’s love affair by close-reading a few of the album’s horniest tracks. The musician turned actor meanders from ’80s synth pop to ’70s-inflected funk in ways that are fun to sing along and drive to even if the only lyrics you’re interested in are the ones that seem vaguely related references to Wilde. While Harry remains mum on the subject of his relationships, this album does not. And the current object of his affections? Olivia Wilde, with whom he struck up a workplace affair while on the set of her erotic thriller Don’t Worry Darling. Harry Styles’s third studio album ( out now, for those who observe) plays a game of kiss and tell, where he outdoes “Watermelon Sugar” lyrics with cringeworthy horniness. Now why were we invited to Harry’s House if all we’re going to do is third wheel? Gone are the days of coy ( read: cunnilingus) fruit references and despair over the end of his relationship with Camille Rowe. The resolution for this app can be set as high as 1080p HD – though 720p or 480p will prevent overheating and save battery power – and recording can be set to automatically begin as soon as the app has started up in order to save time. Some reviewers have noted choppy video quality, and you'll see some advertisements – but, hey, you can't have everything. And on top of all that, four languages are supported: English, Spanish, French, and German. Recorded videos can also be uploaded to the cloud via Google Drive, YouTube, or Dropbox, and individual files can be sent to an email address. You have two options for how the app uses your phone's storage: you can set a max capacity that the app won't go over, or you can just allow it to use all the available space on your phone before it starts writing over the oldest files. You'll be able to play music on your phone even while the app is recording – which isn't always a guarantee in the world of dash cam apps – and you can choose which video files to delete if you need to free up phone space after an uneventful trip. If it hasn't locked a video, it'll use continuous loop recording with a time range of up to 60 minutes, which overrides the oldest videos in order to make room for new ones. It offers both manual and auto-recording modes, lets the user set their preferred resolution (up to 720p HD), can record audio, displays the time and speed of a vehicle in its videos, and auto-records a locked video file if it detects a collision. 's Smart Dash Cam app makes a strong case as the top dash cam app for iPhone. That said, the quality of the features on offer should satisfy any driver. And like any dash cam app, it'll drain your phone's battery like crazy, so you'd be wise to keep your phone charging at all times while using it. This upselling could arguably be considered a benefit, since it makes it easy for users to upgrade.Īlso, Nexar has been dinged in the past for selling its users' data. For one thing, the app will try hard to upsell you on the official Nexar dash camera, which will pair with the Nexar app to offer high-quality video and additional features (it also costs $60, and the app works fine without it). The app also offers a unique feature: a “1-Click Report” template that lets you quickly fill out a detailed summary needed for an insurance claim, covering the place, time, impact, and video footage involved in the incident. These events are instantly saved to your phone, including GPS location tracking, and are also auto-backed up to the user's private Nexar cloud. This free app offers a lot of the perks you'd expect from a physical dash cam – as well as recording your drives, it even uses machine learning to automatically sense important driving events, such as hard brakes and even collisions. With a total of 500 million miles recorded behind the wheel, the Nexar dash cam app comes with a large fanbase – and for good reason. Read on to see all our dash cam reviews and advice. But for personal use only, a dash cam app can be a short term substitute or low budget alternative. It should be noted that compared to a dedicated dashboard camera, getting a dash cam app is not usually the best choice: reliability and convenience in particular will suffer. We've determined Nexar AI is the best dash cam app for iPhone – it offers great basic abilities, impressive machine learning-powered features, and an automated cloud backup that makes it easy to save your videos instantly.ĪutoBoy is the best dash cam app for Android – it includes granular settings, and reliably records even while running in the background of a phone. Our criteria centered around three main areas: how well the basic dash cam app features were executed what additional perks, if any, were included in the app and the quality of user feedback included in each app's reviews. We've combed through the top dash cam apps for iPhone and Android to determine which are the best. It will be easy to use, shoot high quality video, and offer a simple ways to export files, whether by USB, uploading to Google Drive or Dropbox, or automatically uploading to cloud storage. The best dash cam app will be able to loop record, use a collision detection sensor (called a G sensor), and use a phone's GPS ability to track location. |
